Trauma Informed CareTrauma can be caused by a single traumatic event, like a disaster, or be the result of prolonged exposure to adverse experiences, such as physical or emotional abuse and neglect. “Group trauma” is the result of collective adverse experiences, such as poverty, racism, discrimination, homelessness, food insecurity or other challenges. Some research suggests the impacts are inter-generational. Trauma informed organizations (TIOs) are committed to working with patients, staff and the community, to continuously improve healthcare quality and health outcomes for individuals and populations. TIO staff, policies and practices are responsive to the fact that trauma impacts the physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning of individuals and groups, and influences their experiences with the institutions, such as the healthcare and social services systems, designed to help them. Trauma-informed organizations (TIOs) actively avoid re-traumatizing patients, as well as staff, by identifying and addressing the signs and symptoms of trauma, and consciously co-creating supportive, healing healthcare and work environments. FACHC’s Trauma Informed Care Initiative will support Florida’s Health Centers in becoming trauma-informed organizations (TIOs), by providing training, technical assistance, tools and peer support to build their trauma-informed capacity. Things kick off January 27th, 2021 with a three-part webinar series co presented by the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council, a Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) National Training and Technical Assistance Partner (NTTAP) and Sulzbacher Center, a homeless and community health center in Jacksonville, Florida.
